Tooth of Time Traders

The Tooth of Time Traders is the official gift shop of Philmont Scout Ranch, the BSA’s largest high adventure base. It is located in base camp and carries a wide variety of outdoor gear, clothing, souvenirs, and more, bringing in several million dollars of sales for the Ranch each year. During my time working in Philmont’s Marketing and Photo Services department, I assisted with their publication and digital media needs, as well as contributing a number of merch ideas for fun. Here are a few of them.

Fall Catalog Layout

In fall 2024, I assisted with the layout of this catalog, which was printed and sent out to 5,000 readers, and posted online to our email list of 100,000 people. I was mainly involved in selecting photos, creating color stories and initial layouts, product photography, gathering product info, and adapting the finished product for digital use. The campaign was a success, resulting in thousands of dollars in retail sales.

Souvenir Posters

Inspired by the WPA-style national park posters, I created several posters in the same style celebrating some of Philmont's iconic mountains and camps.

I initially made these just for fun and entertainment while I was working in the middle of nowhere. After casually showing it to my supervisor, the idea was picked up by their nationally-renowned gift shop, the Tooth of Time Traders. They sold over 220 copies the first week in store, making well into the five-figures for the store over the next few months.

Philmont Map Poster

A trek at Philmont is such a memorable experience for thousands of people each summer, yet the gift shop lacks much creativity in home and wall decor for participants to remember their trip. Many just hang a map of Philmont up on the wall. I created an illustrated map of all backcountry camps and landmarks for hikers to remember their journey and all the fun times they had. 24x36 in., digital media.

I hand-illustrated some of the essential camping gear that hikers carry, adding in phrases of the Philmont hymn to commemorate their individual journeys on trek.

Ranger Quote Mugs

Looking at the shop’s current mug souvenir selection, I realized that most of them were just Philmont’s logo or the same graphics used for years. I created these mugs with popular phrases heard around camp, serving as a bit of an inside joke that sparks conversation outside Philmont. Shop them online here.
